Talking about voice search can sometimes draw puzzled looks, but mention Siri, Alexa and Hey Google suddenly you know exactly what it is. It’s been around for years on mobile devices and home assistants popping up in homes across the country.
Voice is gearing up to be a huge part of search’s future and it is set to rocket even further by 2020.
Online Marketers now understand that voice searches matter, and they are taking the time to adapt their online business before they get passed by. But first it’s important to understand where voice search results are coming from and their relationship with your content.
What is voice search?
Voice-enabled, more commonly known as voice search, is a speech recognition technology that allows users to search by saying terms aloud rather than typing them into a search field.
It is most popularly used on Siri for iPhone, Cortana for Android, Google Home and Amazon Echo and has seen increasing popularity over the past few years.
According to Mary Meeker’s annual Internet trends report, which was posted by SearchEngineLand last June, voice search queries have increased by 35% since 2008. (2008 is widely considered the launch of voice searching technology.)
Since it’s early beginnings, voice search has advanced from something previously used for funny, misinterpreted searches (we’re looking at you, Siri) to a highly developed software that is increasing in significance and growth.
Where do voice search answers come from?
The most obvious answer is that voice search results come from featured snippet boxes, presented at the top of the search results page with a small summary aimed at answering a user’s query. The snippet displays content from within one of the ranking pages that directly answers the question searched for without the user having to visit the actual page.
However, phones and home assistants won’t just automatically read off any old featured snippet.
Not every search query will trigger a featured snippet, plus there’s no guarantee to be the voice search result. There are certain patterns that can help predict what type of snippet voice searches are looking for, such as the format of a featured snippet.
How can I create a featured snippet for voice search?
There’s no wrong or right way of doing this, as Google will ultimately display what it ranks best. However, there are certain steps you can take in order to help your chances.
- Ensure you target your question in your header tag
- Follow up with a simple, short answer that solves the question directly
- Back up the answer with further detail that’s concise and informative
